TITLE: The Evolving Landscape of GEP-NETs – From Precise Staging to Novel Treatments and Coordinated Care

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT
This activity is supported by an educational grant from Exelixis and Novartis

Release Date: November 20, 2025

Expiration Date: November 20, 2026

STATEMENT OF NEED

The optimal management of Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs) and Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors (GEP-NETs) presents significant challenges for healthcare professionals (HCPs) due to the diversity and complexity of these malignancies, leading to practice gaps in timely diagnosis and evidence-based therapeutic sequencing. Many clinicians struggle to recognize potential patients and apply best practices for diagnosis and surveillance. Furthermore, there is a limited understanding regarding the optimal use and sequencing of management strategies, including surgical approaches, systemic therapies like somatostatin analogues and Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy (PRRT), and the effective integration of emerging novel treatments from the latest clinical trials.

This educational initiative is necessary to address these deficits by providing clear, evidence-based guidance on diagnosis, surveillance, and comprehensive treatment planning for NETs/GEP-NETs. By participating, HCPs will be equipped to identify diverse presentations, interpret the significance of functional vs. nonfunctional tumors, and apply current diagnostic guidelines. They will also learn to evaluate the roles of surgery and systemic therapies, understand the complex factors influencing treatment sequencing decisions (such as tumor characteristics, quality of life, and nutritional status), and appreciate the critical importance of the multidisciplinary care team in optimizing patient outcomes. Ultimately, this activity aims to ensure busy clinicians are up-to-date on novel agents and can develop strategies for their prompt and effective integration into clinical practice.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

  1. IDENTIFY the diverse clinical presentations and sites of origin of NETs/GEP-NETs to improve early diagnosis rates.
  2. INTERPRET the importance of functional versus nonfunctional NETs in patient assessment and management plans.
  3. APPLY the latest diagnostic guidelines and procedures for NETs/GEP-NETs   to enhance patient outcomes.
  4. EVALUATE the role of surgery in managing NETs/GEP-NETs and the criteria for choosing between curative and palliative approaches.
  5. ASSESS efficacy and sequencing of systemic therapies, including somatostatin analogues and PRRT, in the treatment plan for NETs.
  6. EVALUATE factors influencing treatment sequencing decisions for NET/GEP-NETs, including tumor characteristics (grade, burden, progression rate), symptom management, previous treatment responses, patient preferences, QoL considerations, and nutritional status.
  7. UNDERSTAND roles of various specialists (endocrinologists, oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, dieticians etc.) within the multidisciplinary team and the importance of collaboration in optimizing NETs/GEP-NETs management.
  8. ANALYZE clinical trial data and evidence-based recommendations for emerging treatments in the management of patients with NETs/GEP-NETs.
  9. DEVELOP strategies for the prompt and effective integration of novel therapies into treatment protocols for NETs/GEP-NETs.
