STATEMENT OF NEED

Gynecologists serve as the primary medical contact for women, especially during reproductive years, placing them in a pivotal position for obesity management given its rising prevalence and profound impact on gynecological health issues including infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome, and gynecologic cancers. Despite recognizing the importance of obesity education, significant practice gaps exist in gynecologists' implementation of effective obesity management strategies, particularly regarding GLP-1 RAs. For instance, a considerable number of OB/GYNs have never prescribed AOMs, only a minority routinely refer patients for weight management, and gynecologists demonstrate notably less confidence and knowledge about AOMs compared to other HCPs. This gap is particularly concerning given that women comprise approximately 70% of GLP-1 RA users for weight management, yet their primary women's health providers may lack the expertise to guide treatment decisions or manage potential impacts on reproductive health.

Multiple barriers contribute to knowledge practice gaps among gynecologists, including insufficient training and educational resources on obesity pharmacotherapy, inadequate reimbursement for obesity counseling, time constraints during appointments, challenges with medication access due to prior authorization requirements, and pessimism about treatment efficacy. Gynecologists themselves have identified behavioral change counseling as a significant deficiency in patient care.

Knowledge and practice gaps among gynecologists directly adversely affect patient outcomes, as women with obesity-related gynecologic conditions who might benefit from GLP-1 RAs are less likely to receive appropriate treatment options or referrals. Specialty-specific education could address these deficiencies by enhancing gynecologists' understanding of GLP-1 RA mechanisms, patient selection criteria, medication management during reproductive transitions, and strategies for integrating pharmacotherapy with comprehensive women's healthcare. Additionally, guidance on streamlining referral processes and navigating insurance barriers would enable gynecologists to better facilitate access to effective obesity treatment, ultimately improving women's health outcomes across the reproductive lifespan.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

• UNDERSTAND the clinical benefits of GLP-1 receptor agonists for obesity and its related comorbidities.
• IDENTIFY and MANAGE the adverse event profiles associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists using evidence-based strategies.
• DEVELOP patient-centered strategies to educate patients about the benefits, risks, and expectations of GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy.
• IMPLEMENT follow-up protocols to monitor patient progress, manage side effects, and improve adherence to GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy.
• DESCRIBE how GLP-1 receptor agonists align with gynecology-specific care priorities, such as reproductive health.
• INDIVIDUALIZE counseling and management approaches for GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy to address gynecology-specific patient needs, such as PCOS.
