Description: This curriculum is designed to empower neurologists, epileptologists, and pediatricians with the knowledge to address the unique challenges posed by Developmental and Epileptic Encephalopathies (DEEs). Through a blend of self-study modules, live discussions, and action planning, participants will learn to optimize care for DEE patients by understanding the impact of anti-seizure medications on both seizure and non-seizure symptoms.

Patty Osborne Shafer, RN, MN, worked for many years as an epilepsy nurse specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts and as senior director for the Epilepsy Foundation. She is currently a nurse consultant focusing on health education.
Patty received her undergraduate education at the University of Vermont and a graduate degree in neuroscience nursing from the University of Washington in Seattle. She is a past member and past chair of the Epilepsy Foundation’s Professional Advisory Board, a past member of the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation, and a long-term member of the Professional Advisory Board of New England. She has served on the American Epilepsy Society Board of Directors and numerous committees. She participated in the creation of the North American Declaration on Epilepsy and guidelines for first seizures and women with epilepsy. She has served on numerous research review panels and advisory committees for regulatory reform, disability concerns, and public health in epilepsy. Patty was a member for the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on the Public Health Dimensions of the Epilepsies. Current research and clinical interests involve health education and self-management, rescue therapies for epilepsy, use of digital tools for health, and nursing education. She is the founding Chair of the Nursing Section of the International League Against Epilepsy.
